CNC Wire EDM

Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) machines are highly precise tools we use to manufacture components with intricate shapes, contours, and designs in a wide range of conductive materials, including metals such as steel, titanium, aluminum, and copper. The key feature of wire EDM is its ability to cut very fine, complex geometries with high precision and minimal mechanical stress.

Wire EDM uses a thin, electrically charged wire to erode material from a workpiece. The wire acts as an electrode, and as it passes through the material, it creates rapid electrical discharges that melt and vaporize the material. The workpiece is submerged in a dielectric fluid, which helps to cool the area, flush away debris, and improve the accuracy of the cut.

Common Applications of Wire EDM:

  • Precision Cutting: Wire EDM is ideal for cutting intricate or highly detailed parts with tight tolerances, such as gears, dies, molds, and micro components.
  • Thin Walls and Small Holes: It can cut through very thin materials or create very small holes down to sub-millimeter sizes that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional machining methods.

Primo Medical Group uses its Wire EDM machines to create complex parts in medical devices and other high-precision parts used in aerospace and defense applications. Wire EDM ensures parts maintain the tight tolerances necessary for safety-critical applications.

Medical Device Manufacturing:

Due to its flexibility and ability to cut complex geometries, wire EDM is often used in rapid prototyping for testing and development of new products, especially when the designs are highly complex and traditional machining methods are unsuitable.

Advantages of Wire EDM:

  • High Precision: Wire EDM can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.002 mm (±0.0001 inches), making it ideal for high-precision applications.
  • No Mechanical Stress: Since the process uses electrical discharges rather than cutting tools, there is no mechanical force applied to the material, which eliminates the risk of deformation or stress on delicate components.
  • Ability to Cut Hard Materials: It can cut through hard materials like hardened steel, titanium, and exotic alloys that would be difficult to machine using traditional methods.
  • Minimal Tool Wear: The wire itself is consumable, and the process doesn’t wear down tools in the traditional sense, making it cost-effective for certain applications.
